A History of Rustburg Middle School

Rustburg Middle School traces its roots to the building that once housed Campbell County High School, where seventh and eighth graders from this part of the county attended classes.

The school's enrollment grew steadily throughout the 1970s. During the 1970–71 school year, two sixth grade sections from Bocock Elementary School joined the student body, bringing enrollment to 600. Two years later, in 1972–73, enrollment reached 650 students, and the school was officially renamed Rustburg Middle School in July 1974. Growth continued in 1975–76 with the addition of 110 sixth graders from J.J. Fray Elementary School, pushing enrollment to approximately 760.

The school closed for the 1978–79 school year so that renovations could be completed at the former Rustburg High School site, which had been chosen as its new home. During the closure, eighth graders attended Rustburg High School for that year and the two that followed, while sixth graders were bused to Brookville Middle School. Sixth and seventh graders moved into the renovated building for the 1979–80 and 1980–81 school years, and when construction was finally complete in 1981–82, eighth graders returned, reuniting all three grade levels. A further expansion and renovation were completed in September 1995.

For over two decades, from 1986 to 2009, the school also served fifth graders before returning to its current configuration of sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.

Rustburg Middle School's newest chapter began in February 2023, when the current school building was completed.
